NFLL Walkers Group - aka Crazy Mary Adamick's Group

This morning we had six walkers for the extended "walkers explore local parks" class by facilitator Mary Adamick every Wednesday morning. We are now starting at 7:30am for those who are interested.

Five members of the Trailblazers hiked six miles along the abandoned Flagstaff Lumber Company railway. All that remains are railroad grades and railroad ties.

Five members of the Walkers enjoyed an early morning walk in at the Gilbert Riparian Park. It is a popular destination to view many migratory birds and plants.

Spring Picnic - April 11, 2019

Seventy plus New Frontiers members attended the Spring Picnic at Desert Breeze Park, Chandler AZ. There was plenty of food: fried chicken and pulled pork plus all the fixings. A raffle followed lunch and there were may surprised winners, some who did not win last year.

A book exchange was available and many went to a new homes. An assortment of backyard games provided an opportunity for many to test their skills.

Mesa's Education Pass - March 29, 2019

Mesa was settled 140 years ago when hardy pioneers began transforming a scrub-brush covered desert from village to metropolis. Historians Ron Peters and Jay Mark dug deep into photo archives to uncover long-forgotten images that help reveal the story of Mesa’s Educational past and its remarkable school architecture.

Presented on site of one of Mesa’s oldest remaining elementary schools, Irving school (ca 1890-1936) and included a brief tour of the school.

Historic Irving School also known as Mesa Public Schools, Creative & Performing Arts, 155 North Center Street in Mesa.

Hearing loss

The Living Well with Hearing Loss Class is presented by Dr. Aparna Rao and Dr. Kate Helms-Tillery and ASU graduate students. Participants are learning solutions to overcome communication difficulties from hearing loss that may remain even after receiving hearing aids or cochlear implants. It's a 4 session class including topics: the human ear and hearing, learning to "read" an audiogram, communication breakdown and repair, amplification devices, psychological consequences of hearing loss and self-advocacy skills.

Eleven members braved a chilly morning to hike 3 miles a desert trail north of Fountain Hills. They hiked the Ballantine Trail and returned via the Pine Trail.

The Trailblazers hiked the Lost Goldmine Trail the day following a series of rain in the valley. The desert was giving up the winter to spring flowers. The trail was 5.5 miles and provided a challenge.

With a possible chance of rain, twelve brave soles hiked the Butcher Jones Trail at Saguaro Lake. The day turned out to be partly cloudy and the scenery awesome. This hike was 5 miles.

New Frontiers Holiday Party was held at the Mesa Country Club, Mesa AZ. Over 100 members, spouses and friends attended. Several quilts and holiday decorations were auctioned.
